favorite novel of all time. better than any other fantasy world imo. Tolkein is a mastermind.

Il Signore degli Anelli (titolo originale in inglese: The Lord of the Rings) è un romanzo epico fantasy scritto da John Ronald Reuel Tolkien e ambientato alla fine della Terza Era, nell'immaginaria Terra di Mezzo.
Scritto a più riprese tra il 1937 e il 1949, fu pubblicato in tre volumi tra il 1954 e il 1955. Tradotto in almeno 38 lingue, con decine di riedizioni ciascuna, resta una delle più popolari opere letterarie del XX secolo.
La narrazione riprende dove si era interrotto un precedente romanzo di Tolkien, Lo Hobbit, ma la storia di «Frodo dalle nove dita e l'Anello del Fato» narrata nel cosiddetto Libro Rosso dei Confini Occidentali si inserisce ora in un'ambientazione di più ampio respiro, attingendo pienamente al vasto corpus storico, mitologico, linguistico creato ed elaborato dall'autore nel corso di tutta la sua vita. L'intera saga ha esercitato nel tempo un influsso culturale e mediatico a diversi livelli, ottenendo attenzione sia da parte di critici, autori e studiosi (sono stati infatti prodotti molti saggi e ricerche, anche a livello accademico, sui testi tolkieniani) che da parte di semplici appassionati che hanno dato vita a gruppi e associazioni culturali, come le varie società tolkieniane, sparse in tutto il mondo.
Il romanzo ha ispirato, e continua ad ispirare, libri, videogiochi, illustrazioni, composizioni musicali, ed è stato adattato per la radio, il teatro ed il cinema, come nel caso della trilogia diretta da Peter Jackson.

In 1980 Heinlein published a novel called The Number of the Beast. It involved parallel universes, The World as Fiction, and dragged in Lazarus Long, as Heinlein seemed to do in most of his later books. While parts of it were fun, it was also confusing and disjointed in my opinion. I will read any Heinlein for the writing alone, so I am a fan (in fact, I was for a time the webmaster for The Heinlein Society), but I can see that some of his stuff is better than others. So when I heard there was an alternate version of this novel, I had to check it out. And The Pursuit of the Pankera keeps the same basic setting and has the same beginning as The Number of the Beast, but I think it is much better. The plot is a lot more cohesive and the novel just flows …

And as a huge fan of the Lensman universe the part of the book that goes there was quite a treat. For those who don't know, the idea of The World as Fiction is that fictional worlds are real in other universes, so the characters here visit Barsoom, Oz, and the Lensman universe. Tons of fun.
