In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment's calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best.
Dopo aver letto tanti commenti entusiastici, mi aspettavo di trovarci molto di più. La prima metà del libro è faticosamente in salita, una distopia che non appare mai abbastanza minacciosa, una società che non è mai esistita e mai esisterà, per cui non ci spaventa. Il personaggio principale si perde in continue riflessioni (scritte, è vero, con straordinaria eleganza), standosene immobile a subire ogni cosa. Perfino la ribellione sarà qualcosa che subisce, invece di prendervi parte attivamente. Dalla metà in poi, però, la storia acquista mordente, alcune delle molle che erano state tese (non tutte, purtroppo) si decidono a scattare e le pagine scivolano via rapidamente. Tutt'altro che un capolavoro, ma rimane comunque un buon romanzo, scritto in maniera egregia dalla Atwood - meravigliose alcune delle descrizioni, quadretti di un lirismo leggero ed emozionante.

She is haunted by memories of the time when she was independent, but she doesn't believe it is possible to escape from Gilead. Even Ofglen isn't able to make a dissident out of her, Offred just turns her back to politics innuendo once she is satisfied with staying with Nick. Il racconto dell’ancella è un romanzo distopico che ipotizza un futuro non troppo lontano in cui, negli Stati Uniti, si è instaurato un brutale regime teocratico che ha raccolto il potere nelle mani di (pochi) uomini – i Comandanti – e ha relegato le donne a ruoli subalterni. Per rafforzare il loro status, i Comandanti si sono assicurati l’utilizzo delle preziose Ancelle, donne ancora fertili dopo che un qualche disastro nucleare ha drasticamente ridotto la fertilità della popolazione americana: queste vengono costrette a essere dei meri uteri da riempire, delle fattrici che devono imparare a obbedire, ad annullarsi nel loro ruolo e a considerarsi fortunate di vivere in un Paese dove sono protette dai peccati.

Purtroppo però questa patriarcale unione di Stato e Chiesa non protegge affatto le donne, ma anzi incoraggia la loro oggettificazione, lo slut-shaming, la violenza sessuale entro le mura domestiche, gli abusi di potere, il divieto di accesso a un qualunque tipo di istruzione, la proibizione di mostrare il proprio corpo e qualunque altra gabbia nella quale, nel corso della storia, il genere femminile è stato rinchiuso: Il racconto dell’ancella ci mostra senza pietà tutta la ferocia del patriarcato e ci dimostra con lucidità quanto esso sia un sistema sociale che stritola le persone, mietendo vittime tanto tra le donne quanto tra gli uomini.
Sarebbe già terrificante così, eppure l’aspetto peggiore de Il racconto dell’ancella è il fatto che niente nel mondo distopico creato da Margaret Atwood è inventato o portato all’esasperazione, com’è tipico di questo genere letterario. Per stessa ammissione dell’autrice, infatti, una delle sue regole durante la stesura del romanzo era: nessun aggeggio tecnologico immaginario, nessuna legge immaginaria, nessuna atrocità immaginaria. Quindi, qualunque cosa leggiate in questo libro è accaduta davvero in un certo momento della nostra storia e in una determinata parte della Terra e la mancata eradicazione del patriarcato fa sì che qualcosa del genere, date le giuste circostanze, possa accadere di nuovo.
Ecco perché, con l’arrivo di Donald Trump alla Casa Bianca, questo romanzo è tornato in auge e la serie televisiva trattane che debutterà il 26 aprile prossimo su Hulu ha riscosso così tanto interesse: con il suo linguaggio violento e sessista, il nuovo presidente degli USA ha aperto numerose crepe nell’unico muro che vale la pena di erigere, cioè quello tra Stato e religioni, e ha legittimato di nuovo tutta una serie di atteggiamenti discriminatori nei confronti di donne e minoranze. Questo è inaccettabile e Il racconto dell’ancella è qui per dirci che non dobbiamo mai abbassare la guardia e mai cedere terreno perché l’eteropatriarcato è ancora in mezzo a noi e non dobbiamo permettergli di alzare troppo la voce, correndo il rischio che si faccia dei nuovi amici.
