A contemplative search for meaning and understanding. The acceptance that maybe not having a purpose is perfectly fine. The big philosophycal questions discussed with unbelievable clarity and levity.
At this point I believe Becky Chambers books need a sci-fi subgenre all for themselves. "Optimistic sci-fi" or something like that. God knows of we need more stuff like this. The ability to see so much good in humanity Is something I really envy.
I've read all books published by Becky Chambers up until now, and every single one of them has been better than the one before. I can't wait to read the next one.

Great presentation (it's designed to look and feel like a worn and torn book printed in the 80s), average contents (there's no need to explain who the Ghostbusters or H.P. Lovecraft are, thank you, nor to tell again the plot of the tv show). For fans only.

I'm not a big fan of military sci-fi. The whole "follow orders without thinking" mentality just does not click with me. Nonetheless, this was a good read. Author is an ex military, and you can tell after just one page. The main character is likeable and well described (not so for all other characters, alas). Plot is gripping and well paced. Ending felt a little abrupt, but on second though it has everything needed to wrap everything up nicely.
My main criticism to this novel is that, while it has a great depiction of military life/people, well it has little else to offer. Basically all characters are military, every location visited is a military base/station. Very little worldbuilding is done outside of war-related stuff. There's definitely room for improvement here in the next novels.
