Very scientific and technical book

I finished the book in two days. It’s great. You will especially enjoy it if you’re interested in detailed explanations of how stuff works on Mars (farming, orbital dynamics, making water, fixing and tinkering with all the tools and machinery, etc). There isn’t a lot of emotions involved in large sections of the book, so don’t expect it. This makes sudden jokes hit very hard though. There are emotional moments and the book will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Read entire book in one sitting

I started this book on the subway home from work, continued reading over dinner, and finished it that night in bed. It's griping, the science is solid, and it's about as close to "hard sci-fi" as you can get. The movie is also quite enjoyable.

And probably at least semi realistic? Didn't like it as much as Project Hail Mary by the same author. This sorta read as a sequence of "oh crap, another thing went wrong" problems, followed by solutions. I'm certain this is realistic - or even still overly optimistic, given what they were surviving through - but kinda made for an overly long, repetitive narrative. I suspect this is part of why they cut some of these out of the movie (and to save time, but also it got repetitive). Nevertheless, a fun read if you enjoy sci-fi that sticks close to contemporary science.

读完这本书是几年以前的事了，我记得我是在Kindle上读的，也记得读到(.Y.)时的大笑不止。主角乐观幽默的性格让整个旅程都相当有趣。

Leggendo questo libro (in versione originale, quindi non sono in grado di commentare la traduzione) ho scoperto che la sua prima edizione fu autoprodotta. Mi chiedo solo se il mercato anglosassone è diverso antropologicamente oppure ha semplicemente una massa molto maggiore dell'asfittico mercato italiano. Ad ogni modo, che dire di questo libro? Non ho le competenze scientifiche multidisciplinari per valutare se la storia regge, ma forse non è nemmeno così importante nonostante il libro sia di hard SF. Io lo leggo come un Robinson Crusoe del XXI secolo, o forse più correttamente come un McGyver dello spazio: l'idea che traspare è come l'ingegnosità umana permetta di trovare risposte a tanti problemi usando quello che si ha a disposizione. Diciamo che almeno per me questo alla lunga diventa esagerato, e non per nulla ho letto il libro ancor più a spizzichi e bocconi di quanto la mia già alta capacità di …

Magari il film è stato migliore da questo punto di vista: il libro almeno per me è risultato buono ma non ottimo.

Un astronauta viene per errore abbandonato su Marte e deve sopravvivere con le poche risorse a disposizione e le sue conoscenze di meccanica e botanica. Idea interessante, stile funzionale alla narrazione ma niente più, con frequenti guizzi umoristici più o meno riusciti atti ad evitare l'abbiocco del lettore dopo l'ennesimo calcolo ingegneristico spiegato nei minimi dettagli. Da ingengnere, l'ho trovato alla lunga un po' ripetitivo e con un finale un po' troppo affrettato.
