Sounds Fake But Okay is a long-running podcast about asexuality and culture. With so little representation and focus on asexuality, especially at its inception, simply existing has had a lot of value.

The same can be said of it in book form. Having accessible, personal, and humanized accounts of asexual existence is essential.

While the book leans a fair amount on various quotes and anecdotes, it also weaves a story about what it means to be on the ace spectrum in a decidedly allosexual world. How that being outside such a central cultural norm fits very neatly and obviously into queerness.

It can at times feel a bit like people talking at you. Like when you hit a particular area of interest of someone and they go off. But that's not necessarily all bad. The kind of emotion and passion around the subject is needed when there's so few voices …

Sounds fake but okay nasce casualmente come podcast, che due amiche hanno iniziato quasi per scherzo, giusto perché il 2017 era il periodo in cui sembrava che chiunque ne mettesse su uno. Il nome prende spunto da tutte quelle cose strane di cui alloromanticə e allosessessuali amano parlare e che sembrano palesemente false dal punto di vista dell’esperienza aroasessuale. Il podcast, con grande sorpresa di Costello e Kaszyca, ha avuto molto successo, visto che andava a coprire un piccolo vuoto al quale nessunə aveva mai pensato prima.

Il libro prende quindi spunto da questa esperienza: Costello e Kaszyca non hanno alle spalle studi di teoria queer, ma solo la loro vita come persone nello spettro asessuale e/o aromantico che hanno creato un podcast che le hanno messe in contatto con altre persone dello spettro asessuale e/o aromantico. Quindi non aspettatevi disquisizioni accademiche, ma una panoramica di cosa significa nel concreto …
