Ender's Game is a 1985 military science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card. Set at an unspecified date in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind after two conflicts with an insectoid alien species they dub "the buggers". In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, Earth's international military force recruits young children, including the novel's protagonist, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, to be trained as elite officers. The children learn military strategy and leadership by playing increasingly difficult war games, including some in zero gravity, where Ender's tactical genius is revealed. The book originated as a short story of the same name, published in the August 1977 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. The novel was published on January 15, 1985. Compared to my previous two books, Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, felt quite fast and quick, but that doesn’t mean the story doesn’t develop just as well as the books I read last year, not at all!

The state of the world is not a good one, Humanity hasn’t really conquered the stars and flourished just yet, other than a few stations. Earth has been at war with the buggers, some insectoid alien race that had come in contact with the planet twice already. The first time it was just exploration, and Humanity managed to hold out. The second time, was colonization, and we almost lost. Thankfully, the genius strategist Mazer Rackham managed to stop them and became the hero of the story. We lived happily ever after.

But decades have passed since then, and a third invasion is on the horizon.

Ender's Game è il primo romanzo di fantascienza militare che io abbia mai letto (se non forse il mio primo romanzo di fantascienza in toto), quindi non ho le competenze per confrontarlo con i suoi antecedenti e i suoi epigoni e valutare se a suo tempo fosse rivoluzionario o se ora sia antiquato. Posso "solo" dire che l'ho trovato un volume non geniale ma assolutamente godibile: abbiamo la nostra classica guerra fra Umanità retta da un regime militare e misteriosi alieni, abbiamo un'accademia militare per bambini superdotati quanto psicopatici, abbiamo un eroe che sarebbe sicuramente un Gary Stu in termini di supercompetenza ma, e questo è lodevole, è psicologicamente fragilissimo, e questo dà pepe a tutta la trama – sappiamo tutti che Ender se la caverà benissimo in ogni nuova prova dell'addestramento, ma la vera posta in gioco è la sua salute emotiva e, in definitiva, (passatemi la banalità, ma …
