Two women meet in a department store, move in together, and their lives quickly become creepely enmeshed. Meanwhile, a transcriber for a ghostwriter, hears a disturbing message recorded for her on one of the tapes. It is a mystery that is not much of a mystery (and is probably not supposed to be), riffing off David Lynch's movies and predictable hard boilers to say something about what it means to be us, to exist outside of our relations with others. What this something is, isn't entirely clear, and maybe that's OK, too. But somehow I found the various strands of the book weren't entirely working together, some parts felt boring and pretentious, other gripping and ironic in a quite charming way.
