Snuff

If anything I enjoyed it more this time round, although as in many of Terry's works there are bits that seem rushed and give me the feeling he had more to say but maybe was worried that it would make the book too long.

Anyway, it was chilling to read the racism in the light of what is going on today in Britain with Brexit and in the US with Trump. The same phrases, the same casual attitude to a 'lesser' race that the majority just don't understand.

In a way having the goblins have such amazing talents (the idea of the noble savage?) didn't really add to the story as it made you feel that we should like them not because they were thinking beings but because they were talented artists...

The book does feel disjointed at times but it still manages to make you laugh and cry on the same page, due to the great man's writing.

Not a book for the children, but a thoughtful read for adults.

Il Comandante Vimes va in vacanza, in campagna... o più precisamente nelle terre della famiglia di sua moglie Sybil. Per Vimes il concetto di "vacanza" è incomprensibile, ma da bravo sbirro riesce subito a scoprire quali crimini contro una specie vivente si stanno commettendo... e a rimettere tutto a posto. In questo trentanovesimo libro del Discworld abbiamo nuovamente Vimes come protagonista, insieme a suo figlio Sam junior (un vero esperto sulla cacca, tra l'altro); abbiamo i goblin; e abbiamo il tema chiave della Legge, di chi decide cos'è la legge e di quante cose illegali si possono fare in nome della legge. Per la cronaca, la parola "snuff", oltre che applicarsi all'annusare tabacco come si vede fare da molti personaggi del libro, sta anche per "morti arbitrarie e spiacevoli".
Rispetto ai libri precedenti, forse qua c'è più una ricerca della battuta fine a sé stessa, pur declinata secondo il verbo del Discworld: però devo dire che era da parecchio che non mi divertivo così con un libro di Pratchett. Beh, per ridere davvero almeno cinque o sei dei precedenti bisogna averli letti, ma chi non lo ha mai fatto?
