@anagnostes@mstdn.io at first it was a bit clichéd but as it progressed I got much more into the story. There are 3 books in the series and I'm going to give the next one a go.
I love sci-fi and fantasy and anything that spans the genres. I adore Terry Pratchett and his writing, especially the Discworld. I would love to impress a dragon on Pern. I also enjoy crime stuff.

A re read after many years. Both a familiar friend and a prescient warning. While Orwell wrote about socialism (Ingsoc) it honestly feels like it could be any government in power, lying, using tech to control, and using fear and hatred to manipulate.
Rather enjoying this so far, the diversity felt a little forced initially, though probably because I'm, so used to all white, all able-bodied, and neurotypical characters! But it is making me want to play TTRPGs again!
If you are after something enjoyable with no big thinking but isn't a romance you might like this. It's about a stay at home dad, and another dad. And competition, and bullies. Some fun twists and turns before a satisfying ending.
While I need to tell you this book needs trigger warning for almost anything you can think of, it is a gripping story. I cried through the entire second half. the author cunningly twists and shapes the story to keep you guessing but in a tantalising way, you never want to skip ahead, but you do want to read faster. It's about (ice) hockey, but you don't need to know about sport to understand the book, it's about people, culture, and small towns.
