The Terror is a 2007 novel by American author Dan Simmons. It is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, on HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, to the Arctic, in 1845–1848, to locate the Northwest Passage. Che strana cosa, ripensando a The Terror mi vengono in mente innanzitutto difetti: troppo lungo (sfiora le 800 pagine!), un inizio faticosissimo, un finale poco soddisfacente, un cattivo troppo telefonato. Eppure questa epica nell'Artico, una rielaborazione narrativa di una storia reale già probabilmente efficacissima di per sè ma con qualche inserto fantastico, funziona bene. In particolare la parte centrale, quando l'equipaggio inizia a sfaldarsi sotto i colpi di qualsiasi cosa, è ben riuscita, si legge col fiato sospeso pur sapendo già, da elementi storici, come è andata a finire. Dan Simmons sa scrivere, ma forse per chi non è ama le storie di esplorazioni polari è un po' pesante.
