Il mastino dei Baskerville è la quinta, riuscitissima opera di Arthur Conan Doyle dedicata a Sherlock Holmes. A differenza degli ultimi due libri, si tratta di un romanzo e, per la prima volta, l'autore riesce a essere efficace anche in una narrazione più lunga.

I primi romanzi dedicati a Holmes – Uno studio in rosso e Il segno dei quattro – infatti, non hanno neanche lontanamente l'incisività e il pathos che possiamo trovare nei racconti brevi de Le avventure di Sherlock Holmes e Le memorie di Sherlock Holmes e, appunto, ne Il mastino dei Baskerville.

È davvero difficile smettere di leggere questo romanzo finché Holmes non ci rivela quale sia il mistero che minaccia l'ultimo discendente dei Baskerville. Il caso, come non smette di ricordarci un entusiasta Sherlock Holmes, è davvero molto intricato, con depistaggi e …

I primi romanzi dedicati a Holmes – Uno studio in rosso e Il segno dei quattro – infatti, non hanno neanche lontanamente l'incisività e il pathos che possiamo trovare nei racconti brevi de Le avventure di Sherlock Holmes e Le memorie di Sherlock Holmes e, appunto, ne Il mastino dei Baskerville.

È davvero difficile smettere di leggere questo romanzo finché Holmes non ci rivela quale sia il mistero che minaccia l'ultimo discendente dei Baskerville. Il caso, come non smette di ricordarci un entusiasta Sherlock Holmes, è davvero molto intricato, con depistaggi e una marcata aurea di sovrannaturale, che ci ricorda la passione di Conan Doyle per il fantastico.

Inoltre, l'ambientazione nella brughiera di Dartmoor ci catapulta in un luogo dove non troveremmo bizzarra la comparsa di spettri e dove i lamenti del misterioso mastino dei Baskerville potrebbero richiamare quelli delle banshee, anche se siamo nel Devon e non in Irlanda.

Si stenta quasi a immaginare un personaggio così razionale come Sherlock Holmes aggirarsi in questo paesaggio di vecchie leggende e ancora ben ancorato al lato selvaggio della natura. Eppure sarà proprio grazie al suo rigoroso metodo investigativo che il caso sarà risolto, ancora una volta.
