The Subtle Knife, the second book in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, is a young-adult fantasy novel published in 1997. The novel continues the adventures of Lyra Belacqua (now known as Lyra Silvertongue) recounted in the first novel, Northern Lights, as she investigates the mysterious phenomenon of Dust. Will Parry is introduced as a companion to Lyra, and together they explore new worlds in the search for Will's father.

The epic struggle becomes clear, for us if not for Lyra and her new friend

In The Golden Compass, book 1 of this series, we met Lyra, the half-wild charge of a scholar of an Oxford University in a parallel universe, and follow her adventures with warrior polar bears to the gates of a new world. This is book 2 of the series, in which Lyra meets Will, who had fled 'our' world into a parallel world to escape shadowy men who are pursuing him to obtain the papers of Will's long-lost explorer father. Review of 'His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)' on 'Goodreads'

Good book with interesting characters and plots.
Most of them still familiar from book 1, which I enjoyed more.

Towards the end it felt as if there were quite a lot of named characters that will not return in book 3, making it all a bit confusing at moments.

Still, a very worthwhile read. :)
