Une place a prendre

Cara Rowling, era un bel po' di tempo che non ci “incontravamo”. Da quel lontano 2008, quando uscì in Italia Harry Potter e i doni della morte, ultimo volume della serie che aveva accompagnato la mia adolescenza. Inutile dire quanto abbia adorato Harry Potter e quanto fossi titubante all'idea di leggere qualcos'altro della Rowling.

Infatti, il denominatore comune delle molte recensioni che ho letto per preparami alla lettura de Il seggio vacante sembrava rimarcare l'assoluta diversità delle due opere. Mi sono quindi accostata a Il seggio vacante mettendo da parte Harry Potter e facendo finta che l'autrice non fosse la Rowling.

Di conseguenza, potete immaginare la mia sorpresa quando mi sono resa conto che in realtà tutta questa differenza non sussisteva. Pur nella differenza di genere, a me è parso evidente che Il seggio vacante fosse figlio di Harry Potter.

Come avrete sentito dire o letto dalla trama, Il seggio vacante parla delle ipocrisie e degli odi celati da sorrisi smaglianti e pacche sulla spalla in una cittadina inglese, Pagford. Non si salva davvero nessuno: né genitori, né figli; né ricchi, né poveri; né carnefici, né vittime. Sono tutti pronti a tramare l'uno contro l'altro per il proprio tornaconto, che sia per una posizione di potere o per mera vendetta.

E in mezzo in tutto questo degrado, non ho potuto fare a meno di pensare ai Dursley, gli zii di Harry Potter, i peggiori babbani che si possano incontrare (a detta di Hagrid, citazione a memoria da Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale). Leggendo Il seggio vacante non riuscivo a fare a meno di pensare che i Dursley – sempre a spiare i vicini, pontificare sulla degradazione altrui e a voler primeggiare sugli altri – a Pagford sarebbero nel loro ambiente.

Nel loro arrivismo e nel loro egoismo, i pagfordiani hanno perso una visione a lungo raggio. Hanno perso immaginazione e speranza. Hanno perso tutto quello che li renderebbe persone migliori e più felici e nella loro cecità sono determinati a far sì che nessuno si affranchi da questa situazione. E la possibilità che qualcosa cambi li atterrisce perché li costringerebbe a riconoscere e a far conoscere agli altri la loro meschinità e la loro falsità. Esattamente quello che accade ai Dursley durante la serie di Harry Potter.

Quindi non posso che ringraziare la Rowling per avermi dato un altro assaggio di Harry Potter e allo stesso tempo di aver creato un romanzo stupendo nel quale è facile riconoscere bassezze fin troppo vicine a noi tutti. Così vicine da essere parte di noi, della nostra parte peggiore: è sempre bene tenerlo presente per evitare di diventare dei pagfordiani qualunque.

There are many things you should be careful about this book:

1. Don't let yourself deceived by the author's name. Just because she's the one who wrote about Harry Potter, it doesn't mean this book has the same atmosphere. It's a completely new deal. Therefore, don't be disappointed if "it's not like you thought it was", because honestly, the fact that Rowling can write about something this different and this real is the proof she's more than "the woman who invented everyone's favourite wizard". She's a writer, a novelist at her finest.
2. Some people, especially journalists who clearly pushed the fact that Rowling is the one who wrote Harry Potter, claimed this was "a modern comedy". It's not. A comedy by nowadays definition is something that makes you laugh and by classical definition is a story with the schema beginning-troubles-resolution-happy ending. This is NOT a comedy. Don't expect everything will end alright for the good guys and bad for the villains, and moreover while some characters are certainly villains in this book, they are not just "bad". They're first of all, people, and we all know only very few people can be defined exactly "good" or "bad", while the other 7 billiards are incredibly flawed. Don't forget that: they are not villains, they're just flawed people, like everybody else.

This said, I highly recommend this book to everyone that is mature enough to comprehend the reality. Have a good read.
