It was Rowling's first publication since the Harry Potter series, her first apart from that series, and her first novel for adult readership.The novel is set in a suburban West Country town called Pagford and begins with the death of beloved parish councillor Barry Fairbrother. Subsequently, a seat on the council is vacant and a conflict ensues before the election for his successor takes place. Factions develop, particularly concerning whether to dissociate with a local council estate, 'the Fields', with which Barry supported an alliance. Cara Rowling, era un bel po' di tempo che non ci “incontravamo”. Da quel lontano 2008, quando uscì in Italia Harry Potter e i doni della morte, ultimo volume della serie che aveva accompagnato la mia adolescenza. Inutile dire quanto abbia adorato Harry Potter e quanto fossi titubante all'idea di leggere qualcos'altro della Rowling.

Infatti, il denominatore comune delle molte recensioni che ho letto per preparami alla lettura de Il seggio vacante sembrava rimarcare l'assoluta diversità delle due opere. Mi sono quindi accostata a Il seggio vacante mettendo da parte Harry Potter e facendo finta che l'autrice non fosse la Rowling.

Di conseguenza, potete immaginare la mia sorpresa quando mi sono resa conto che in realtà tutta questa differenza non sussisteva. Pur nella differenza di genere, a me è parso evidente che Il seggio vacante fosse figlio di Harry Potter.

There are many things you should be careful about this book:

1. Don't let yourself deceived by the author's name. Just because she's the one who wrote about Harry Potter, it doesn't mean this book has the same atmosphere. It's a completely new deal. Therefore, don't be disappointed if "it's not like you thought it was", because honestly, the fact that Rowling can write about something this different and this real is the proof she's more than "the woman who invented everyone's favourite wizard". She's a writer, a novelist at her finest.
2. Some people, especially journalists who clearly pushed the fact that Rowling is the one who wrote Harry Potter, claimed this was "a modern comedy". It's not. A comedy by nowadays definition is something that makes you laugh and by classical definition is a story with the schema beginning-troubles-resolution-happy ending. This is NOT a comedy. Don't expect everything …
