The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else. As they grow, as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge, Elena and Lila remain best friends whose respective destinies are reflected and refracted in the other. They are likewise the embodiments of a nation undergoing momentous change. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists, the unforgettable Elena and Lila.
Very slow and very dense writing, but I got quite into it towards the end. Don't think I could read the entire quartet though.
Mi trovo parecchio in difficoltà a valutare un romanzo di questo tipo. Diciamo che è stato molto difficile non odiare la maggior parte dei personaggi, non solo per come si comportano ma quello che incarnano ai miei occhi: la mediocrità. Penso tuttavia che Ferrante abbia raccontato tutto ciò DA DIO.
Lila, Lenuccia, Nino e gli altri alla fine sono praticamente reali e non per forza devono starmi simpatici. Sicuramente, andando avanti, sono riuscita a immedesimarmi nella narratrice, Lenuccia, che mi ha dato la sensazione di aver trovato un'amica che mi racconta le sue storie, sedute davanti a un caffè, in un pomeriggio come gli altri.
La prosa scorre come non mi sarei mai aspettata, ero talmente immersa nella lettura che mi dimenticavo del tempo che scorre: questa è una sensazione preziosissima per chi, come me, ama i libri.
