Banana Yoshimoto is known for her in-depth female protagonists and including otherworldly themes and ruminations on death and the afterlife into her writing. This book is a prime example for her style. Calm, measured but also vivid in the description of the inner workings of Hotaru and how, by reconnecting with her past, she's able to move forward. Great read.
