Il sottotitolo dell'edizione originale di questo libro è "storie di musica e del cervello", e spiega molto bene il suo contenuto. Sacks racconta infatti di tutte le patologie cognitiva che toccano la sfera musicale da un lato, e dell'uso della musica come terapia dall'altro. Le neuroscienze hanno sicuramente fatto dei passi da gigante negli ultimi decenni, ed è ora possibile avere una certa idea di quali parti del cervello siano dedicate alla ricezione e comprensione della musica; ma brancoliamo ancora nel buio, e spesso non si può fare altro che delle supposizioni su cosa stia accadendo in una persona, cercando di estrapolare delle teorie dai comportamenti osservati. Le descrizioni sono sicuramente molto vivide, e in questo libro c'è anche un tocco di personale che nelle altre opere "tecniche" (Zio Tungsteno a parte, quindi) non si …

Le neuroscienze hanno sicuramente fatto dei passi da gigante negli ultimi decenni, ed è ora possibile avere una certa idea di quali parti del cervello siano dedicate alla ricezione e comprensione della musica; ma brancoliamo ancora nel buio, e spesso non si può fare altro che delle supposizioni su cosa stia accadendo in una persona, cercando di estrapolare delle teorie dai comportamenti osservati. Le descrizioni sono sicuramente molto vivide, e in questo libro c'è anche un tocco di personale che nelle altre opere "tecniche" (Zio Tungsteno a parte, quindi) non si trovava affatto. Però la mia sensazione è stata quella di una rimescolata di molto vecchio materiale, ricollocato da un diverso punto di vista e con qualche aggiunta. Insomma, non molto utile se non si è specificatamente interessati alla musicoterapia e si è già letto gli altri libri. La traduzione, a parte un paio di pecche, regge bene.
